Ask a Dentist

Q: I am having my wisdom teeth removed, how long do I need to recover?

A woman holds up an ice pack to her jaw.

After getting your wisdom teeth extracted, you are likely to experience some pain and swelling. There may be some bleeding. Typical wisdom teeth recovery time is three to four days, although it can be as long as one week. The length of recovery depends on how badly the wisdom teeth were impacted and how they were erupting.

Your Winnipeg dentist or oral surgeon will instruct you on how to take care of your mouth for the recovery period. You may have to avoid brushing, spitting, flossing and rinsing for 24 hours. After that, you can gently brush your teeth and rinse your mouth frequently with salt water to keep it clean and prevent infection. Ice packs can help to reduce swelling, and a soft diet will be more comfortable during healing.
