Ask a Dentist

Q: How can I follow through on my New Years resolution of better oral health?

A patient sits in a dental chair in between a dentist and dental assistant.

You’re off to a great start with brushing and flossing daily, and to add on we like to recommend following the Canadian Dental Association’s Five Steps to a Healthy Mouth.

  1. Keep your mouth clean by brushing and flossing daily
  2. Check your mouth regularly for signs of gum disease and oral cancer
  3. Eat healthy foods, avoiding sugary drinks and treats
  4. Avoid Tobacco
  5. See your dentist regularly (we recommend every six months)

Your oral health affects your overall health.  Research has shown there is an association between oral disease and other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke, respiratory illness in older adults, as well as pre-term and low-birth-weight babies.

Although researchers are just beginning to understand this relationship, evidence shows that oral disease can aggravate other health problems and that keeping a healthy mouth is an important part of leading a healthy life.
