Ask a Dentist

Q: My tooth hurts, how do I manage the pain until my dentist appointment?

When you have an oral issue that requires medical attention, our dentists at Dental Image Therapy Centres, located at Garden City Shopping Centre and St. Vital Centre in Winnipeg, recommend the following home remedies to provide some relief until you can see your dentist:

  1. Clove oil is a traditional remedy to numb nerves. That being said, it should be used carefully. You only need a couple of drops on a cotton ball. Apply the oil on your affected tooth or gum firmly until the pain temporarily recedes.
  2. A warm, salt-water gargle reduces pain and helps reduce swelling. A 30-second gargle cleanses the area around the affected tooth. You can repeat this treatment as much as you need until you see your local dentist.
  3. Peppermint tea tastes great and has some numbing power. Let it steep in the cup for a while. When the tea is at room temperature, use it as a mouthwash. For better pain results, apply the wet tea bag directly to the tooth.

Keep in mind, the above remedies only provide temporary relief. Toothaches require medical attention from a dentist. Book your appointment with us today!
