Q: How strong are my teeth?

The strongest substance in your body is your tooth enamel; stronger than bone and harder than steel.

Tooth enamel is the top, white layer of your teeth. It is made from a mineral form of calcium phosphate, this mineral scores a five on the Mohs hardness scale making it the hardest biological material. In contrast, diamond scores a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale,  talc has a hardness of one and turquoise has a hardness of five to six.

Unfortunately, tooth enamel is also brittle so it can break easily. This means you should be careful about what you eat and avoid trying to open things with your teeth. It’s easy to chip your teeth when prying the label off of your new sweater or showing off that you can open a beer bottle with your teeth.

Your teeth are also different from bones in that they can’t heal. When you damage your teeth, by accident or from getting a cavity, it won’t grow back. Damaged teeth have to be fixed with fillings, caps, crowns or veneers.
