Q: How long do veneers last?

A dentist fits a patient with veneers.

Our tooth enamel is the most robust material in our bodies. However, it’s brittle, making it fragile and can unexpectedly crack or chip. A damaged tooth, whether chipped, cracked or broken, can become a real pain in the mouth.  Depending on what and how it’s damaged, there are many treatment options available that can help you fix your teeth. One of these options is veneers.

Veneers are thin layers of custom-made porcelain or composite resin that are placed on your damaged teeth. Veneers are glued onto your tooth using a special cement, making them permanent. But how permanent is permanent?

Life Of Veneers

If you have good dental habits and take proper care of your veneers, they can last 10 to 15 years. But they can still be damaged just like your natural teeth. If you have a habit of eating hard foods or don’t take care of your veneers, you may cause veneer damage and have to get them repaired or replaced.

If something does happen to your veneers, don’t be too hard on yourself because, like your teeth, they do wear down. The only thing you can do to help make them last longer is to take proper care of them.

How To Make Your Veneers Last Longer

Here are some simple things that you can do to make your veneers last longer and keep your smile confident and bright:

  1. Maintain good oral hygiene habits. Brush and floss regularly, at least twice per day. Also, visit your dentist for regular dental checkups and teeth cleanings.
  2. Use a mouthguard if you notice that you grind or clench your teeth when you sleep to prevent cracks in your veneers and teeth.
  3. Don’t use your teeth to open nutshells or packaging, or loosen tight knots. Doing these things can chip and crack your veneers and teeth.
