Q: What Is Tooth Bonding?

Have a chipped, cracked or discoloured tooth? Tooth bonding is a painless way to make minor repairs to your teeth. It not only fixes cavities or broken teeth but also improves your smile. Typically, several teeth can be bonded in only a single dental visit. Dental bonding uses composite resin to:

  • Restore tooth shape
  • Close gaps between teeth
  • Match the colour of other teeth

What To Expect

Your dentist will use a shade guide to select a shade of resin that blends with your natural teeth. Before attaching the bonding, the tooth surface is roughed with a mild chemical to help the resin material bond with the tooth. Then, the bonding material is applied and molded to the desired tooth shape. An ultraviolet light or laser is used to harden the composite resin. Finally, your dentist will shape and polish the resin material to match the rest of your teeth. Over time, the bonding may wear down, and you may need to book another appointment with your dentist for a touchup.

How To Care For Bonded Teeth

Bonding materials can last from one to 10 years before needing replacement. This is dependent on many factors which can affect the longevity of the bonding. Good oral hygiene practices will make your bonding last for many years. This includes brushing twice daily for two minutes, flossing once per day and visiting your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.

Since the bonding material can chip or break off completely, it’s important to avoid bad habits like biting your fingernails, using your teeth to open items or chewing on ice and very hard foods. After the bonding procedure, you should contact your dentist if you notice any sharp edges on the bonded tooth.

Tooth bonding is an affordable way to change the colour, shape, angle and spacing of your tooth. It’s also a comparable alternative to dental veneers, which is an ideal option for those looking for a semi-permanent option to improve their smile.
