Q: Do Antibiotics Help With Toothaches?

At Dental Image Therapy Centres, one of the most common tooth issues our dentists see are toothaches. Having a toothache is not only painful but it can really ruin your day, causing you to need emergency dental services.

When you come in for a toothache, we’ll assess what is happening in your mouth and work with you to develop a treatment plan. Depending on what is going on, you may need antibiotics to help with the pain. These instances may include:

  • The tooth has an abscess or is infected
  • You need a root canal (we want to make sure to give your body a fighting chance against any bacteria build up in your root system)
  • Your gums are infected

Antibiotics are powerful, lifesaving medications and are used to treat bacterial infections, and prevent them from getting worse. It’s important to know that most toothaches do not require antibiotics. If your toothache needs antibiotics or any prescription medication, your dentist will provide you with a prescription to fill with your pharmacist.

So, What Causes A Toothache?

There are many reasons why you may develop a toothache; find out more in this past Ask A Dentist blog post. But when you get a toothache, the first thing you should do is assess what is happening in your mouth. Take a moment to do a quick self-check:

  • Do you have food stuck in your gums?
  • Is the pain persistent? Even if it comes and goes?
  • Can you see a hole or crack in your tooth?
  • Are your gums swollen?

With a toothache, you may also experience fever and chills, and have bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth.

But the best thing to do with a toothache is to give us a call and get in for an emergency dental appointment. Both of our Winnipeg dental clinics are open late and on weekends so when your tooth becomes a pain, you can get the relief you need. While you can book an appointment through our online portal, the fastest way is to give the clinic closest to you a call at either St. Vital Centre (1-204-255-0587) or Garden City Shopping Centre (1-204-334-4341).
