Q: How Can I Have Good Oral Health on a Low Budget?

Your oral health is an investment, and we understand that comes with a cost. While important, it can be expensive to maintain good oral health. We’ve put together some achievable ways you can take care of your teeth, even if you’re working with a small budget.

Oral Care on a Budget

Investing in your oral health will pay off in the long run! Here are some healthy habits that won’t break the bank.

  • Prevent issues by having a solid routine. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily will set you up for dental health success. Keeping up with your daily oral hygiene will prevent cavities and the need for other larger procedures.

  • Be proactive. If something feels off in your mouth, get it checked immediately (before it escalates into a larger issue). Many of your dental concerns can be treated quickly if they’re addressed early on.

  • Use the best tools for proper oral hygiene. Dental Image Garden City has products available to maintain a healthy mouth. Curaprox Interproximal Brushes help you to clean the teeth and gums more easily and effectively than dental floss. The OptiRinse contains the necessary nutrients to strengthen teeth and soothe irritated gums.

  • Try an electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes are very effective at cleaning your teeth. While it’s a small investment up front, they can make a big difference over time – and would be well worth your money.

  • Be mindful of your food choices. If you’re looking to protect your teeth, focus on foods that don’t contain decay-causing bacteria, like fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. Foods in these categories can help protect your teeth from decay and other damaging bacteria. Drinking plenty of water will also help keep your teeth and gums healthy, washing away bacteria and food particles, and increases saliva production and flow (which also washes away bacteria and food!).

  • Don’t use your teeth for anything other than eating. An easy way to protect your teeth is to only use them when you eat! Don’t use your teeth to open bottles or packaging as this can put you at risk for chipped teeth or worse injuries, and expensive procedures.

  • Be aware of medication side effects. Some medications have dental side effects, like dry mouth. If possible, find alternate medications that don’t have side effects that could impact your teeth.

  • Avoid using tobacco products and limit alcoholic drinks. These substances can damage your teeth so it’s best to avoid them or reduce your usage.

  • Use dental insurance if you have it. Dental insurance covers part of your treatments costs, meaning you can get dental care at a reduced rate. If it’s available to you, this is a great way to save some money. Also keep in mind when your insurance resets so you can use it for any upcoming treatment plans.
