Q: How Do I Keep Up With My Oral Health As I Age?

Good oral hygiene and dental care habits are important at any age. But as you grow older, you might have to tweak your daily routine to accommodate the changes in your mouth. One way to effectively manage your oral health is by knowing the vulnerabilities of aging and how it can affect both your mouth and your general health.

Watch Out For Dry Mouth

You should know that dry mouth is not part of the aging process itself, but certain factors like medication or some medical disorders can increase your risk of dry mouth. Moreover, dry mouth can also affect how your dentures fit, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. The condition often causes chafing between the dentures and your gums.

If you’re suffering from dry mouth, we suggest using a moisturizing mouthwash or spray, or chewing sugar-free gum to encourage saliva production. Alternatively, if your dry mouth is caused by medication, try consulting with your doctor or dentist to adjust your dose, or try a new medicine to alleviate the symptoms.

Taking Care Of Your Dentures

While dentures do make chewing easier, they require special care. Remember to brush your dentures daily. Soak and brush them gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove food, plaque and other deposits. Also, don’t forget to clean your mouth after removing your dentures. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush on natural teeth and to clean your tongue, cheeks and the roof of your mouth.

Routine dental checkups are recommended for long-term full denture wearers. Your dentist will help prevent any slippage and discomfort while making sure your mouth remains healthy.

Beware Of Gum Disease

Don’t forget about your gums; gum disease is still a big concern. The Journal of Dental Research found nearly 64 percent of adults over the age of 65 had severe or moderate periodontitis in 2009 and 2010. Since the early stages are reversible, it’s crucial to spot them early on. Regular checkups can ensure early detection and treatment of gum disease.

Practicing good oral habits, visiting your dentists every six months and making changes to accommodate your mouth will help you maintain a great smile for life.
