It’s that time again: a new year (and decade!) and a chance to reflect on what you want to achieve over the next 365 days. Whether you set resolutions or not, January is usually a time to get back to routine after the holidays when you can focus, or refocus, on your goals.
One of the best things you can do for your health this year is to keep up with your oral hygiene. We’ve all had that moment of anxiety before a dental visit where we think back on the times we went to sleep without brushing our teeth or having a bit too much sugar. Don’t worry, our dentists aren’t here to make you feel bad—but what if you came into your dental appointments feeling confident about your oral health?
Brushing your teeth carefully and thoroughly twice a day is the best way to prevent cavities and maintain healthy gums and enamel, the hard stuff on the surface of your teeth. Flossing at least once a day will help get into all the places that your toothbrush can’t, ensuring that you’re getting rid of any food residue or bacteria that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
Another tip for great oral and overall health is to make sure you’re drinking enough water. Water helps to wash away food residue and bacteria that can eat away at your teeth. Staying hydrated is also a way to beat out bad breath, among a variety of other health benefits. Depending on your weight, height and activity level, your water requirements will vary, so be sure to check with your doctor on the right amount for you.
Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good—remember that habits take time to form. If you only flossed twice this week, that’s OK. Start where you are and work your way up from there. When you miss a day, just get back into the routine for next time.
Keeping a journal or record of your habits is a great motivator because it helps you see all the days you met your goal. Another trick is setting up little rewards for yourself when you hit your goals. Last but not least, talking about your new habits with family and friends and getting them to hold you accountable or share in the journey is a great way to stay on track.
