Everyone seems have their own personal toothbrushing technique, whether it’s back and forth, side to side, or in a circular motion. But did you know that there’s a technique that’s generally considered the most effective at reducing plaque and gingivitis? It’s called the Modified Bass technique, named after the dentist who articulated it, Dr. Charles C. Bass.
Dr. Bass was an American medical doctor, born in the late 1800s, who was a research pioneer in both dentistry and medicine in general. His efforts to promote proper dental hygiene were instrumental in the advancement of our field, and has earned him the moniker “the father of preventative dentistry”.
Want to try his method for yourself? Here’s how it works:
• Hold your toothbrush parallel to your teeth at a 45-degree angle (the bristles should be slightly under your gumline)
• Firmly but gently brush with a circular motion 15–20 times in each area
• Brush all teeth on the outer side and then, using the same motions, clean the backside of the teeth
• Hold your toothbrush vertically behind your front teeth and brush up and down
• Finish up by brushing the chewing surface of your molars and brush your tongue
For some additional toothbrushing tips, make sure to brush for approximately two minutes at a time, ensuring your brush reaches the molars at the back of your jaw. Use a soft-bristled brush, as harder bristles can wear away the enamel that protects the outside of your teeth. Even better, use a Curaprox toothbrush. A Curaprox toothbrush is made of soft polyester filaments rather than traditional nylon, making them bacteria resistant and easy to keep clean for longer. You can purchase them at our Garden City location!
Speaking of wearing away enamel, you also don’t want to brush too hard – vigorous or firm brushing can also weaken and damage it.
And that’s all there is to it! The Modified Bass Technique is a very accessible and intuitive way to remove the most plaque and gingivitis possible from your mouth when brushing. It’s been recommended by dentists the world over with only minimal changes for nearly a century, which speaks to its benefits.
