Ask a Dentist

Q: Why is the roof of my mouth itchy?

A dentist stands in the hallway at one of our Dental Image Therapy Centre locations.

When the roof of your mouth is itchy, it’s usually a sign of allergies. In addition to an itchy roof of your mouth, your sinuses could also become inflamed, which can cause pain in your teeth.

To clean out germs, we recommend you use an alcohol-free antiseptic mouthwash, which can be bought at any drug store. That will help to keep your mouth clean and also provide some relief from the itch.

The irritation may also be caused by components in your toothpaste. Switching to a different brand can sometimes alleviate your symptoms. Talking to your dentist can help to determine causes of the irritation.

You’ll also want to talk to your doctor about which allergy medication is right for your particular symptoms.
